Golden Retrievers are an amazing breed of dog well-suited to a variety of lifestyles. Whether you live in the city alone, in the suburbs with a large family, or in the country with a host of other animals, a Golden Retriever will fit in perfectly. They are the absolute epitome of conformity enjoying long lazy nights on the couch watching TV with their owner, playing in the yard with the kids, or fetching game on the back forty on a hunting expedition.
These fantastic dogs were bred to bring back downed fowl from the land or water wherever it may land. Therefore they are water loving sport dogs that can have as much fun with you at the beach chasing tennis balls into the waves as they do with you at the park catching a Frisbee.
Their superior temperaments are loving and warm and these animals are generally especially good with children. They are large enough to be boisterous with the most active child, and sturdy enough to take all of the good-natured bumps and knocks from less coordinated toddlers. When looking for a breeder chose one that has healthy looking animals, and tests for hip and elbow dysplasia, hereditary conditions of joint deterioration in Goldens. There are also tests for hereditary cataracts and you should be able to view the reports of both parents, and if possible even further back to grandparents.
These tests cannot be performed on very young puppies usually before sale age, but since they are largely hereditary clear parents usually indicate puppies that will grow up free of these debilitating problems. It is a good idea to always ask for a guarantee that in should these problems be tested positive in the future you can redeem some sort of return. Usually a replacement animal is hard to deal with because you will have become attached to your beloved dog regardless, but many breeders will offer compensation for issues such as dysplasia and cataracts if encountered even if the parents tested clear. Whether you agree to accepting a replacement or a partial refund should such problems occur is up to you and how your family can adjust to such circumstances. Testing in the first place goes a very long way to ensuring you will never have to make such a painful decision.
